Bajaj takes U-turn to romance 100cc bikes

In a major strategic U-turn, country’s second largest two wheeler manufacturer Bajaj Auto Ltd has decided to re-enter the 100cc motorcycle segment — a category it had decided to exit only two years back.

The company has announced that it will launch a new offering in the 100cc segment later this year, in a tacit admission that its bid to help the market graduate to higher engine specification bikes has failed to pay dividends. This comes barely six months after it launched a 125 cc variant of Platina, which had raised hopes of a discontinuation of the 100cc variant in the near future.

They are looking at numbers above 20,000 units per month for this motorcycle.

Though the company did not specify any reasons for this volte face, numbers have their own story to tell. In the last two fiscal, Bajaj’s sales in the 100cc segment have witnessed a free fall which has been duly exploited by market leader Hero Honda.

In 2007-08, which was one of the worst years for the two wheeler industry in recent times, Bajaj’s overall sales declined 20 per cent to 16.79 lakh bikes. During the same period, Hero Honda witnessed a flat year with overall sales registering a 0.23 per cent growth.

“To expect the 100cc segment to dissolve overnight and for consumers to reject Hero Honda bikes altogether was a little over the top, no matter how aggressively you price your own products. This is a diversified market and to capture it.

Hitachi announced newly developed lithium-ion battery with high power density

On May 18, 2009, Hitachi Ltd. said that it aims to acquire 30% of the U.S. automotive lithium-ion battery market within 2015 that would worth 100 billion yen in sales. Recently, the company announced to develop a new type of lithium-ion battery which has the highest power density of 4,500 W/kg. The battery’s power output is 1.7 times higher compared to the company’s mass-produce lithium-ion batteries. Hitachi Ltd. and Hitachi Vehicle Energy Ltd., which develops lithium-ion batteries for electric and hybrid vehicles, jointly developed this new lithium-ion battery. Sampling of the new battery will start in the fall. Industry Week reports:

To reduce internal resistance, the battery employs a new manganese cathode and an original Hitachi battery structure, such as thinner electrodes, power collection method and effective configurations.

Hitachi Company is one of the pioneers in developing lithium-ion battery systems. Till date, the company has delivered around 600,000 units to auto companies and railway companies. In 2000, Hitachi Group mass produced the world’s first safe, high-performance lithium-ion battery. The company is currently producing its second generation lithium-ion batteries with a power density of 2,600 W/kg that are being used in railways and cars. The company already completed building third generation lithium-ion batteries with a power density of 3000 W/kg and it will go into mass production in 2010.

"DO THE RIGHT THING" NAACP LAUNCHES 5TH OPERATION BIKE WEEK JUSTICEMONITORING CONTINUES

The NAACP will again keep a close watch on the City of Myrtle Beach and local businesses this holiday weekend as annual Black Bike Week festivities commence.

For the fifth consecutive year, the NAACP will conduct Operation Bike Week Justice to monitor activities in the resort town during the annual Memorial Day weekend gathering of African American motorcycle enthusiasts. Throughout the weekend, NAACP teams will be monitoring police activity and treatment of black tourists, observing the practices of local businesses and watching traffic patterns.

In recent years, the NAACP and African Americans have filed and successfully settled federal discrimination lawsuits against the city of Myrtle Beach and area businesses for unequal treatment of Black Bike Week visitors compared to those who attend Harley Week, traditionally held one week earlier and a predominately white event.

Negotiated settlements have been reached with the City of Myrtle Beach, Damon’s Oceanfront and Barefoot Landing, Greg Norman’s Australian Grill and six other businesses.

“The NAACP remains vigilant in order to ensure all tourists are treated equally,” said NAACP Interim General Counsel Angela Ciccolo. “When necessary, the NAACP will continue to pursue litigation to right these wrongs.”

“Any form of racial discrimination against Black Bike Week visitors will not be tolerated,” said NAACP Vice President of Stakeholder Relations Nelson B. Rivers, III, a native South Carolinian. “Closing businesses or refusing to provide equal services to Black Bike Week visitors that are provided to visitors at other times of the year, not only makes no economic sense, it is against the law.”

As a result of the NAACP’s hard work, several restaurants that were closed in prior years have opened their doors and welcomed black bikers. And now, the Myrtle Beach Police Department uses the same traffic pattern on Ocean Boulevard from 29th Avenue North to 17th Avenue South, during the times of 2:00 p.m. to midnight on Harley and Black Bike weekends. Under a settlement agreement, the Myrtle Beach Police Department must also train all officers deployed during Black Bike Week on policing crowds and cultural sensitivity.

Some progress has been made over the last three years, notably the successful conclusion of every federal discrimination lawsuit filed in Myrtle Beach that arose from complaints by African American tourists who attended Black Bike Week festivities between 1999 and 2007. However, several establishments remain closed and continue to engage in discriminatory practices despite being aware of the lawsuits and Operation Black Bike Week Justice.

Moreover, the City has enacted ordinances designed to eliminate the Harley Week and Black Bike Week. The ordinances prohibit parking lot gatherings, landscape gatherings, loud mufflers and many special events. Additionally, the City has implemented new helmet and curfew laws. The Association will be monitoring law enforcement to ensure the new ordinances are equally and fairly applied during Harley Week and Black Bike Week.

“The NAACP supports reasonable regulations,” said Myrtle Beach Branch NAACP President Mickey James. “However, the Association will oppose any discriminatory enforcement of the new ordinances.”

Again this year, a complaint hotline will be activated for individuals to report closed restaurants, police misconduct or other unfair treatment. Black Bike Week attendees can report incidents by calling (888) 362-8683 or come to Mount Olive A.M.E. Church located at 1108 Carver Street [in Myrtle Beach] to file a complaint in person. Dozens of calls last year listed complaints against businesses for increased prices and noted police misconduct, frivolous charges and large fines for minor offenses.

“The NAACP is committed to fair and equal treatment of all people,” said NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous. “We support everyone’s right to recreational opportunities and discrimination should not be tolerated for anyone.”

Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization. Its members throughout the United States and the world are the premier advocates for civil rights in their communities, conducting voter mobilization and monitoring equal opportunity in the public and private sectors.

Ford Falcon XR6

Before we get stuck into this comparo, we must admit that the cars are a tad mismatched. Both cars have 6-speed gearboxes, but the Ford has an automatic, while the Holden is a manual. As such, the mid gear roll on performance test from 80km/h went to the Holden.

We thought the super-powerful low end of the Falcon engine, with torque peaking at just 2000rpm, would dice up the Holden. But it seems the new Gen IV 6.0-litre V8 has a much stronger bottom end than the 5.7-litre Gen III engine it replaces; yet from higher speeds the V8 engine is a complete monster, able to generate massive levels of twist.

In terms of everyday use the Falcon wins out because of its lower fuel consumption: the Falcon XR6 Turbo drinks 12.3L/100km while the Commodore SS V uses 14.4L/100km. Other than that there was little to pick between the cars in everyday conditions. The Falcon was perhaps a little better in the city, but the SS V had much more road presence while both offer relatively smooth rides and plenty of creature comforts.

Both are large sports cars measuring around 4.9 metres in length and both are provided with fairly stiff suspension setups and hefty anti-roll bars to match, yet both cars have been tried and tested on Aussie roads and because of this they are great long distance tourers. The highway is not an enemy to these guys, nor are back country roads, and they can soak up distances with effortless ease, as the 6-speed gearboxes they aren’t too bad on fuel consumption when coaxed along in top gear.

On more demanding roads, the SS feels to be the more structurally rigid vehicle, and as such the Falcon is a little bit better on worn out suburban roads as the bumps aren't transmitted through the frame quite so succinctly.

The SS V's rigidity was to be credited to having good body strengthening and torsional design – which bodes well for the new Zeta platform (upon which the VE Commodore range is based) and it's future performance applications, such as the Camaro. A few passing comments concerning the ride in the SS drew attention to the suspension, which came across as somewhat soft in certain situations. Double rate/double acting shocks (e.g. Mitsubishi Evo) would improve it, or even an active system (e.g. RS 4).

At one point during our test the Falcon was following the Commodore and where the latter bottomed out, sparks flying where the quad stainless steel exhaust pipes kissed the bitumen, the Falcon bumped through without contact.

So, while the body of the Commodore SS V is stiffer and offers good feedback, the suspension system has to deal with its extra weight and sometimes this plays against it. It feels as though Holden has ‘Calais-ed’ the SS. The old FE2 felt like a firmer setup.

The Falcon XR6 Turbo is roughly 100kg lighter than the 8-cylinder Commodore SS V (1694kg vs 1790kg), and it shows both in a straight line and round corners. The SS V is never left behind by XR6 Turbo but it just isn't quite as nimble as the Ford.

Through corners, the SS doesn’t feel as big and heavy as it stats would suggest; testament to the new suspension rig which while not as stiff is at least more progressive than the system it replaces.

It tips into corners very precisely, with affirmation. It provides fairly crisp communication through the wheels – the independent front suspension works wonders under duress, and with big 19-inch wheels shod with grippy rubber, the cars feels very planted on the road. It’s a rear wheel drive vehicle too, so there’s a touch of oversteer under marginal throttle inputs and big-time power oversteer if you want it. It can be steered with the throttle if you turn ESP off, but at times it feels unwieldy, and mid-corner bumps in the road will upset its balance and make it shimmey like a mirage on a hot day.

The weakest link for the SS V were the brakes. They were decent, and had a lot more feel than the Commodore Omega we tested earlier in the year, but slowing the cars bulk from the speeds that this car can reach can be a daunting exercise.

In the Falcon the drive is easily explained - very firm and refined. It tracks resolutely through corners for something of this size and bulk, and the up front weight was easily directed and the driving force corresponded as expected.

Even as the rear end gets reacquainted with the laws of physics and slips out a touch toward a drift, our non-safety-pack XR6 Turbo felt quite able and was more inclined to raise an involuntary smile than a smirk or any concern.

The XR6T is sometimes limited by its DSC (dynamic stability control) through corners – it's not as smooth a system as the SS V's ESP. It can even make the Falcon XR6 Turbo understeer a bit. With traction off it's much more ebullient through corners, and generally speaking it's lighter front end makes it easier to throw into corners without the front outside wheel pushing wide.

Compared to the Holden Commodore SS V, the Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo feels lighter on its feet, because there's less weight over the front end (it has a smaller, lighter engine) and the steering feels better in the Falcon – it’s slightly heavier.

While it's true that the Falcon can navigate the apex of a corner slightly better than its rival, both vehicles fire out of corners with colossal force, yet a good deal of poise. The independent rear suspension on the Ford was always top notch, and now the Holden has a new rig which gives it a much better feel while cornering under higher throttle inputs.

With such huge reserves of torque, you can slam the throttle in either of these cars once you’ve passed the apex and, with a slight wiggle of the rear end, the cars seem to pounce forward, spearing ahead with locomotive force. Indeed, these cars are supremely powerful, and a hugely rewarding to drive. In the dry.

The Holden is more demanding to drive and sometimes more rewarding as a result (and sometimes not), where the Falcon can be a lot easier to wring every last drop of performance from. And that typifies the major differences between the two cars – one of them you hold on to with white knuckles, and the other is slightly less insane.

The SS V has more bodyroll than the XR6 Turbo, and given its extra weight and slightly softer suspension this is understandable. Drivei n the SS is very light, with a rigid race car feel to the chassis, but the suspension is geared more towards luxury than race, as is reflected in the electronic safety systems.

http://www.dragtimes.com/images/10808-1995-Ford-Falcon.jpg

The combination of the 'a-little-too-light' steering with the awesome on-tap torque of the LS2 means that this thing moves very quickly, but the unfortunate ramification of the lighter steering was lower road feedback. This feeling was all the more noticeable after driving the Falcon - with it's feel being more ‘connected’ to the road – and then jumping into the the SS V, when it seemed to steer more numbly. It's no less fun and almost as responsive as the Falcon, but you aim-and-fire rather than feel your way through corners

BMW S1000RR launch: One day to go!

It looks set to be one of the most sophisticated superbikes ever built.

There’s been much talk of the S1000RR’s expected performance (190bhp plus is rumoured) and neat design touches, in terms of its electronic aids and management (traction control, performance modes, ABS etc) the new BMW is set to be the most innovative and clever superbike yet conceived.

In addition, MCN’s technical expert Neil Spalding is convinced the S1000RR employs a radical cylinder head design that provides both an unusually good inlet port design and allows the engine to be as compact as possible.

“The best inlet ports in motorcycle racing are usually found on desmodromic Ducatis, where the space freed up under the closing rocker – where the spring would be in a normal engine – is used to straighten the inlet port and make the intake of fuel-air mix more efficient.

BMW appears to get the same effect by offsetting the cams.” Add to Mixx!

Scott launches new Project Plasma Time Trial bike

Those of you who receive Mick Rogers Twitter updates will already be aware that the Columbia High Road rider, along with team mate Mark Renshaw, have a new time trial bike ready for opening Giro Team Time Trial.

Integration is very much the name of the game with the new Scott Project Plasma TT. Every part that's feasible has been built into the chassis, in essence this allows the engineering team to work on the bike as one item as opposed to a collection of parts over which they have limited control.

There are a number of keys issues regarding the latest Plasma version:

Integrated shift cables. Thanks to Shimano's electronic Dura Ace groupset, Di2, the designers at Scott have been able to fully integrate the shift cables inside the frame. This is the neatest solution we've seen to date as the cable runs inside the bars, through the headset and along the downtube before emerging at the front or rear mech as required.

Integrate fork and cockpit. When viewed from above it becomes clear that Scott has tried to create a seemless airflow around the fork, headtube, bar and stem by designing them all on one page. The highlight of which has to be the stem which segues sleekly into the top tube.

Integrated bottom bracket and brake. Down at the bottom bracket it's a seriously large junction and again the Plasma designers have approached this as one area to create as smooth and flowing a design as possible. The rear brake is tucked up just in front of the rear wheel and the Di2 mech mounted as tidily as possible. Check out the non-driveside chainstay for a piece of minimal design.

Integrated legality. A 3:1 ratio is the UCI's specified maximum legal ratio of tube depth against width. We'll have to take Scott's word for it but the whole bike has been designed with this ratio in mind so they are expecting it to be fully compliant with the tightening regulations.

Maruti Cervo Car Details and Pictures

Maruti Suzuki are planing to Launch Maruti Cervo Model in india. Maruti Cervo is a Replacement of Maruti Suzuki Alto/Wagon-R. Maruti Cervo is B-Segment car. Maruti Cervo is japanese model and Maruti Suzuki Cervo is the latest small car recently launched in Japan. The Maruti Cervo is a compact five door mini car, that looks to put the other kids on the block into the shade. This sleek cute car offers 54bhp 660cc engine that boasts to offer peppy performance with great fuel economy. The Ex-showroom Price of Maruti Cervo would be between 2 Lakh to 3 Lakh, by using a cheaper material to make it cost less, but, we doubt that Suzuki will use such cheap material so long as price is considered. The name Maruti Cervo has been a history for jap Suzuki cars mainly used in the Japanese version of alto. The 800 will be removed and the Alto will be pushed down to the 800 segment, then there will be place for the Maruti Suzuki Cervo. Maruti Cervo will come equipped with an engine capacity of a litre. Considering the trend flowing in the Indian market, 60-65 bhp is a realistic estimate of the power that will be sent to the front wheels.

In The Exterior of Maruti Cervo, Maruti Cervo looks like the Honda Fit. The lines and cuts of the Maruti Cervo car are neat and classy and the clean blacky covering at the end of the windows are cleverly made so as not to see too many holes. The headlights seem too agressive and getting ready to vrroomm and seems confident, well we can hope it really does. The Small mini SUV looks at the back, with an arching roofline, wedgy stance, slanted headlights and stubby bonnet makes out a new shape of itself and bound to be a great car if its priced is good and if its at 1Lakh, it will be crazy selling. The rear is equally attractive as the front end of the Maruti Cervo is. The large lamps add appeal and character to the rear of this Suzuki.

In The Interior of Maruti Cervo car look like Maruti Swift. The rectangular air vents in the center and the circle open closed ones on the sides dont look even and looks a bit uneven. the colors of the controls lights up the dash. The boot is very small, but for daily shopping and office stuffs its just good. Seats at the back can seat only two and the third one can cramp up the place. A lot of storage areas are available to keep stuff in the front and find little at the back. Power Windows are airbags are available in the international markets but we doubt that it will come to India at that cost atleast airbags as an option would be better to make the car safe. In the outside markets Maruti Cervo car is equipped with front semi-bucket seats, 4-speed auto gearbox a K6A DOHC engine with VVT, bluetooth capability.

"Ritz, which will be available in petrol and diesel variants, will be India's first BS-IV compliant car," the company said in a statement, referring to the Bharat Stage IV emission norms.

Maruti 800 vs Tata Nano

Maruti 800 is the bestselling car of the year 2008 produced by Maruti company. Though the looks of this car are not too good but its regular facility makes it best at its price. It is the car for congested city areas.
Tata Nano, the car best for middle class family to complete their dream of having “My Own Car”, produced by Tata, is one of the striking names in the car market in India.

Model and Design: The outer look of Maruti 800 is not so good. The plastic that is used is not so good nor is the door pocket, but the interior has a bit new look. The 4 seat interior has new dials; fabric and better looking instrument which give lightly & airy experience.

The interior space is also suitable with car size. The head lamps are also spot clear.
The 4 seated Nano looks quite good as it has a new dashing look. Overall height & width of this car is about 1652 mm & 1495 mm (& 1620 mm with ORVM).The Head lamp & Tail lamp also has clear lens. The car has many unique colors like Racing Red, Summer Blue, Champagne Gold, and Ivory White etc.

Engine & Transmission: The 800cc engine & two valves per cylinder produce 37bhp of power. The 5-speed gearbox is good in harnessing the power but the engine is noisy & takes some time to reach a marginal speed. The main feature is the mileage of the car which is about 16kpl on city roads and it is stretched to 22kpl on highways. The power steering is precise and offers good feel that some one will miss it at low speed while parking the car.
With Nano’s 624 cc engine and 2 cylinders it can give a maximum of 35 PS @ 5250 rpm and also a maximum torque of 48 NM @ 3000 +/-500 that can remit an effort of 105 kmpl which is a pretty decent number. It has a 4 forward gear with 1 reverse gear. Tata Nano has 30% 0f Credibility.

Features: The most important feature of Maruti 800 is its mileage & steering which makes it all important than others at a reasonable low price. This car is reliable, cheap and easy to maintain on the city congested roads.
Tata Nano is the car which is best for a lower middle class family and for its comparative unique features at a comparative low price. It is safe, secure, reliable & also comfortable. It has unique colors, dashing look, and also a reasonable speed at a decent time interval.

Last of all it can be said Maruti 800 is the car which is around for many years and is still going strong. This car is much more reliable than Nano as it is the best one can say for the city rides and easy to maintain in traffic. But if one believes in a Tata product and is also looking for a new model car that is cheap in price and fashionable in looks then he must go for the Tata Nano Car as it could be the car of the era. NISSAN TEANA!!!!!!!!

Nissan Teana is set to strike a chord with office executive types. The truth is, the Teana’s rear end is easily the car’s best angle, with its Merx CLS inspired swooping lines exuding a sense of grandeur.

Chances are the same hyperactive executives won’t be quite as excited if the car were reverse parked.

The front, for all its vast hectares of chrome, doesn’t look quite as sophisticated. The gigantic headlights, which look fine on the Presage MPV, fail to complement the stylish behind.

The profile, with the distinctive sixth light window, roofline and chrome strip running near the lower edge of the doors, immediately relate it to the Cefiro. But it, too, looks nondescript after the flamboyant rear quarters.

There are plenty of Cefiro genes floating in the Teana’s cabin. The desired impression is one of being at home in the living room. And like the kind of spaces we see in Days Of Our Lives, the sofas chairs are clad in luxuriant leather, wrinkled to appear even more welcoming. The armrests are dressed with wood like veneer tops, just like a sofa. The front passenger seat even has a footstool that extends at the touch of a button. Softly glowing orange LEDs mimic the warm light of a soothing fireplace.

But unlike the perches in the long running soap, the items in the Teana are adjusted electrically with memory settings for the driver and have fans set in them to pipe in cool or warm air. These are not just firsts for afternoon TV.

But, more importantly, ventilated seats are not found in the Honda Accord and toyota camry , rivals in Teana’s class.

AUDI A4!!!!!

The new 2009 Audi A4 “isn't a radical departure from the outgoing model, but it now bears a greater family resemblance to the larger A6,” they report. Motor Trend likes the new “sculpted lines” and the “more aggressive front end,” noting that the changes give the A4 “a planted, sportier stance” that “holds the road with a new sense of confidence and enthusiasm.” Car and Driver approves of the new lighting applied to the nose, calling it “LED eyeliner”; Cars.com says these lights are “an uncommon feature, but they are very good at grabbing the attention of oncoming motorists thanks to the bright, white light they emit.” Popular Mechanics calls the new design “crisp and attractive, with a face resembling the A5 coupe.” Add to Mixx!

NISSAN SKYLINE!!!EXPERIENCE

Blindingly fast and capable car. Will string a sequence of corners together faster than your brain can process them. It looks superb, it sounds superb, it turns heads, it's comfy, it's faultlessly reliable, and the fuel and insurance bills will have you reaching for the whisky bottle! That, in a nutshell, is Skyline ownership.

I'm glad I owned it, and it's something everyone should drive once, but I must confess I got a bit bored with it. Once the novelty of being able to out-corner almost anything on the road wears off - and admittedly this takes a while - it dawns on you that the Skyline, wonderful as it is, is a just a bit too uninvolving.

As a driver, you just steer it, and tell it how fast to go. It does the rest for you - brilliantly, but for you none the less. I felt a bit surplus to requirements when driving it. I will try to describe a fast corner in a Skyline. Don't brake, switch off your brain, and sling it in. It'll probably just go round. Either that, or you might get a bit of oversteer, but this will correct itself before your brain has even processed what's happening. Even if you're really silly with it, such as bunging it in at ridiculous speeds and jumping on brakes to unsettle it, you might get a lairy four wheel drift for a second or two before you feel the electronics tweaking the diffs, moving power around and dabbing individual brakes to sort out your stupidity. It really is an astonishing bit of kit!

If you think you can live with this, the 18-20mpg average fuel consumption, and insurance quotes with more digits than the number you call to obtain them, get one! Whether you will start to miss being a factor in whether you make it round a corner or not is a personal thing. I did, but you may not. That said, I think I went too far the other way when i sold it and bought a TVR Cerbera 4.5! I swear I lose 10lbs every time I drive it!
