Bajaj Auto's mild 125cc KTM concepts!

  • When I visited the Milan motorcycle show of this year, I felt that some thing worth great excitement is happening in the two wheeler world. The reason is the KTM stunt and the racer concpts being shown to the people.
  • When I saw these two concepts, I really felt that they would havebeen the products from the KTM works at Austria. But I was astonished to know that except for the design, the bikes including the engine, the frame, the gear boz are all totally manufactured at the Bajaj Auto's palnt at Akurdi, Pune. It appears that by this tume in the next year, the two motorcycles would be ready to be supplied to the world markets.
  • Both the Bajaj Stunt 125 and the Race 125 comes with a lattice type frame, into which the all new 125cc engine is hung. The two bikes are designed by the same team who had designed the Bajaj Pulsar. The lattice frame is not only used as a structural design but also as a design element, Top notch suspension.
  • Both bikes feature Brambo disc brakes (both front and rear). Both the bikes come fitted with gorgeous Marchesini alloy wheels. .
  • The single cylinder engine that powers these two concepts which is of immense interest. The new liquid cooled engines is the mildest state of tune meet the 15PS mark without much effort hiven that they are capable of much more because of the 4 valve head operated by twin overhead crankshafts and employing electronic fuel injection. The compact nature of the engine is evident in the way it is hung in the frame and also canted a bit forward.
  • The stunt 125 version is performance personified with its twin can exhaust system while the Race 125 version has just such an innovative approach with its under slung exhaust. There would be a choice of a 5 or 6 feed gear box and the entire system works on power to weight mantra.

Chevy Beat, a small car from GM is keeping the Beat!

  • The stylishly designed small car in the front has long stretched head lights. The slightly sloping roof line gives the Chevy Beat a great look. The rear door handles are tilted towards the top of the rear doors vertically. Despite being a hatch back small car the large wheel arcs on which the 14 inch wheels of the vehicle is placed gives it a sporty touch. The overall design, workmanship, fit and finish are really very good.
  • The Chevy Beat is no doubt the best looking hatch back small car in the market today.
  • As for the interiors the dials for the speedo, rev counter, fuel gauge and the regular idiot lights are eye catching. The fit and finish of the dash of the Chevy Beat is made of good plastic and is upto the standards. The car provides a decent space for sll occupants.
  • The Chevy Beat comes with a 1.2 litre 4 cylinder petrol engine. Although the engine appears to be small it produces a power of 80.5PS at 6200rpm and 108Nm of torque at 4400rpm. The 5 speed gear box is not sticky but smooth. The car is excellent for city drive eventhough it does not disappoint you on weekend high way driving with your family.
  • The Chevy Beat with its small engine and the stylish interiors and the outer look is no doubt a pleasure to drive with the price likely to be in the range of 5 to 6 lakhs when it hits the roads.

Planning to buy a second car. Need to show your parking space.

  • If you are in Chennai think twice before buying a second car. Reason acute shortage of parking spacecity limits in of Chennai. To tackle this problem, the transport authorities are thinking to intrduce a system of asking to show legitimate parking space for your second car before issuing registration.
  • The transport department is in the process of enacting the rules in this regard with a view to discourage the people from parking their vehicles on roads and in return provide more road space for the users. The target would also be on buses and other vehicles in addition to cars.
  • I am still doubtfull about the efficacy of this new system as the major problem is still left out .No body is examining whether the existing roads are adequate to meet the ne present rate of growth of vehicles.

Green flights :Airlines opt for biofuels.

  • Blue green algae, the innocous jatropha plant and the fast growing camelina could power a 735,000 lb palane  soon and airlines plane manufacturers and engine companies have joined hands to use these plants along with fossil fuels to fuel the flights by 2013.
  • The Airlines are planning to acheive the goal of using alternative fuels by 10% by 2017 and by 30% by 2030.
  • The airlines are responsible for 2% emission of carbon in the atmosphere. The fuel cost forms 40% of their total expenditure. Hence it forms a good commercial sense to opt for some alternative fuel.
  • The biofuels must be suitable for all engines of old and new aircrafts and must be able to combune with existing jet fuels.
  • The better biofuels are algae, jatropha, halophytes and camelina. Algae can produce all the biofuel needed for all planes if grown in a huge water mass. The encouraging fact is that the biofuels used till now perform better than fossil fuels.
  • India has good resources to produce algae. This along with sunlight and flue gas can be used to produce this fuel and these fuels should be able to bring down the prices of air tickets. It needs to be ensured that biofuels can be mass produced at a low cost or high yield. Extensive test and flight demonstration are going on so that safety is not compromised.

Future lies in cheaper electric cars!

  • A few days back when I drove my car on the city roads I fumed within me seeing the traffic jams and the snail speed at which the vehicles were moving. My mind started calculating the cost involved on account of wastage of fuels, health hazards caused by the pollution, wear and tear of the car due to continous use of brakes and clutches and the wastage of valuabli time lost. If we calculate the total money lost on account of tall these factors it would work out to millions of dollars.
  • I searched the web curious to know as to whether anything has been or is being done to mitigate this issue. The results were amazing.
  • The days are not far off that we would have cheaper cost effective electuic car tailor made to commuting requirements of the urbanites, as research is progressing  in this regard.
  • Carnegie Mellon University's Robotics Institute have come up with an novel approach of crstomising electric cars for cost effective commuting.
  • Research is on as to how electric vehicles can be customised to cost effectively meet commuting needs, how the effecieney can be boosted and how the battery life can be extended.
  • The researchers have converted the 2001xB Scion commercial vehicle into an electric car on a test basis.

Car sales record increase of 84% in October.

  • Accordiing to SIAM the car sales soared 84% in October mainly on account of festive season and cheaper loans. This was the greatest increase in the last 3 years.  The sale of passenger cars in the domestic market was 1.32 lakh units in october this year as compared to 99052 units in the same month last year, showing the biggest increase in percentage since February 2007 when it jumped 46.5%. This October was the nineth month of growth following an increase of 21% in September, 26% in August and 31% in July.
  • In the passenger car segment, the growth was led by the top 3 car manufacturers Maruti, Hyundai and Tata. Even the other car makers like Honda Siel, GM, Fiat and Ford reported that the demand for cars in the market is on the rise. In the utility vehicles sector Mahindra & Mahindra continued its strong performance with sales growth of 39%.
  • The boost in the car sales in the Indian markets at a time when very few global markets have shown double digit growth can be attributed to entry of new models in the small car segment, softer loans by financial institutions and measures bruoght by the government to boost the industry.
  • In the two wheeler sector notor cycle sales also had a 14% rise with 6.1lakh units in October this year as compared to 5.4 lakh units in the same month last year with all major manufacturers Hero Honda, Bajaj and TVS reporting gains.
  • Scooter sales were down by 13% as the major player HIMSI had to face strikes at its Manesar factory and had almost brought down its production by 50%.
  • The commercial vehicle sector which was the worst hit during the slow down have shown a remarkable growth of 52% with sale of 42562 units in October this year as against 28019 units in the same month during last year. Interestingly the growth was in the meduum cum heavy duty vehicle segment indicating the revival of industrial growth.

  • The engine reduces the mechanical friction and improves fuel enonomy by 5% compared to the current engines.
  • The Kiyora also has the "i-stop" idling stop system and regenerative braking.
  • Combined with all these and the use of the light weight material, Mazda's claim of 91 miles per gallon for the Kiyora appear to be quite genuine.

Maruti 800 Vs Tata Nano.

  • When you enter into the Nano's driver seat you will be surprised with the space available. The leg space is quite comfortable for the car of this dimension. The dash board with unique design is extremely spartan. The curvy centre console has a high mounted speedo and digital fuel guard which are easy to read. At the driver's seat you get a good commanding view of the road ahead. Both the front and rear seats eventhough are moderately comfortable the lack of bolstering gives the feeling of a hard bench. The wide opening doors and the good ground clearance makes in and out of the car an easy task. The quality of the dashboard, steering and gear lever is quite o.k with the buttons and the other switch gear are quite crude. But one caun't expect more at this price.
  • As compared to the Tata Nano, the space available in the Maruti 800 is very much uncomfortable. On the possitive side the seats are weell bolstered and hold you in place better than the Nano but lack sufficient leg space and back support. The quality of the dashboard in the Nano is much better as compared to the Maruti 800.
  • The Maruti 800 has a much bigger sized engine as compared to the tiny one of the Nano and the pick up speed is quite faster.
  • The Nano comes with servo brakes offering sufficient stopping power as compared to the 800 which comes with front disc brakes needing a heavy foot to make the car stop effectively.
  • On the refinement front, the overall refinement levels of the Maruti 800 are much better as compared to the Nano.
  • The Nano is a safe handling car as its weight is concentrated towards the rear with wider tyres fitted at the rear. The steering is reasonably accurate and imparts confidence at high speeds. On the highways the Nano is quite stable to drive.
  • The steering wheel of the 800 is no doubt far superior as it is more accurate and needs far less effort.
  • The Nano's ride can be choppy expecially on rough roads but is slightly better than the 800.
  • Reliability wise the Maruti 800 has proven track record for many years now. The Nano is still relatively new. So how reliable it proves only time will tell. The 800 retails for Rs 2.47 lakhs on road, Mumbai much more than the Nano LX which retails at Rs 2.09 lakhs with an AC.

The 60mph car that can run on water.

  • This car which can run on water at a speed of 60mph no doubt is not designed very attractively. But still it is capable of driving away its competitors.
